The truth being in the middle is a logical fallacy. Doesn't mean it's always wrong, but it doesn't work with liars. This is why the "big lie" technique was invented, or as it's named in the native tongue, "chutzpah". Tell a big enough lie, and people believe you because how could you invent something so outlandish, whereas the average man may tell small lies but would be ashamed to lie brazenly or scared of being found out.
