Aren't there a few places in that area that are radioactive enough it's unhealthy to live there?

Yes supposedly the skeletons in harappa and one of the other indus valley towns have radiation 50 times higher than normal. As well as there being a bunch glass in the region with no minerals that would normally be associated with an extraterrestrial impact, which I supposedly is the only natural thing that can cause that type of glass.
