In the most basic sense all the patriots went to fight at the front lines in WW1. When the war was over and they slowly migrated across great distances to get home the communists were fully embedded and had ownership of the major cities. There's a great scene from Dr. Zhivago where he returns as a hero medic to his home and there are 30+ people living there and his family is confined to the master bedroom.
