Shaka was only good at organizing forces against other natives. People offer compare him to Julius Caesar, someone whose tech was 1600 years prior. Zulu's wicker shields weren't very effective against the Britain's repeating rifles when it was time to put an end to his shenanigans. Though inventive, his grand plan to paint animals on his tribesmen so the bullets wouldn't be able to hit them proved ineffective.
