It's plausible. It's well documented that Rabbinical Judaism was in open competition with the Catholic church for converts from heathen faiths as the Roman empire spread and later declined. Even Karl Marx, one of the authors of the Communist Manifesto, is believed to have been purely of gentile descent as his grandparents were Germans that converted to Judaism and migrated to the Russian Empire.
