There was no cheese or gold. Why go back? Now, if you want to go to Mars (where there is no cheese or gold either) you absolutely need the moon. There are resources that when harvested cost a lot less than moving it up from the earth surface. You can easily go to Mars from a moon base (and come back (which is the most important part.)) we are not all Muslims or Catholics, let’s explore.
There should be plenty of gold on Mars. There are lots of extinct river beds to dredge and there's no reason to believe there aren't going to be pockets of gold at the bottom.
The only question is, can it be mined? Need lots of infrastructure and water for that. And is the cost of mining more than the gold you'll get? (Hint: Yeah, it's probably a net-loss operation)
Maybe the adventure is reward enough. There are plenty of times I've gone out looking for gold and came up short. Question is, can Elon Musk scale up the gold fever?
Oh, wait, <insert obligatory "space is fake and gay" remark>.
riverbeds dont make gold.
supernovae and planet forming make gold.
Net loss operation. Typical government program.

Don’t forget Judaism, Shlomo.
That was harsh, it was implied but you missed it and called me a vile word.
