The right to self defense is important. You must be ready to stand up for yourself. With some folks there's no talk or reasoning that can diffuse the situation. I know I am a reasonable person and I am relatively tall and chances are folks won't give me trouble BUT I am not so arrogant to think that bad things cannot happen to me. You have to be able and willing to defend yourself if and when that situation comes.
