The round towers of Ireland. I've got books on the subject. Nobody knows who built them, or why. It seems obvious to me that they were constructed as lookout towers, to spy approaching enemy forces. Why else would you build them?

I could see them used for that purpose if you had someone sit on the roof but looking out a little window in one direction restricts the view so much that as spy towers they would be pretty much useless. JMO
