Viruses do not intentionally commit suicide and / or self genocide, which is what they do when they rapidly kill the host. They will always evolve to be less deadly.

What the virus evolves towards depends on its mode of transmission. It's generally true that viruses avoid killing the host, but there are exceptions that involve the death of the organism as the vector for the spread. One example is ebola. It kills quickly and spreads through contact with the corpse. It's found in communities that observe certain burial rituals, like those involving touching of the corpse.
