Pharma companies realized long ago that the treatment of acute conditions was barely profitable and too variable. Treating life-long conditions creates a dependable profit stream for decades. This follows the tobacco (or heroin) model. ADHD gets children hooked in elementary school and keeps them as customers well into adulthood where they can switch to anti-depressants and anti-anxiety drugs for the rest of their lives.
... and may I add reinforces psychological acceptance of the notion that there is a pill for everything mentality starting from a young age. ex: "Why diet when I can eat whatever I want and just take a pill to lose weight?"
