I need to start stretching more often. The other day I stretched to hard to quickly and somehow cranked my neck. Necks finally getting better but I definitely will be more careful stretching everyday from now on. Any good suggestions on how, when and why stretching is good for you?

Hang by your arms, decompresses the spine. Crouching like you're worshipping some deity like a dirty sand nigger is actually a good stretch as well. Hold a squat, then plank. Obviously stretch your hamstrings, that's the most difficult and most beneficial stretch.
