Basically titanium dioxide's only value as a food additive is to make the food prettier. We shouldn't need regulations to keep this stuff out of our food. In Europe it is approved, and manufacturers take it as a hint that they should use it. If it were neither approved nor disapproved maybe manufacturers would take to the pattern of "don't add random shit to food." I'm no health nut. I'm all for unhealthy things being in food if it tastes good, as long as it isn't immediately and obviously harmful. But putting any and every thing into food just to make it look good until its shown to be harmful in the long term (requiring longitudinal studies that are unlikely to ever be done), is just silly.
What's worse is that even when such a study is concluded, manufactures still take the hint from the government that it is safe. This is why we need to get government out of science. It adds too much officiality to conclusions that are incomplete or wrong.
