You can only do so much of "following tradition" while ignoring the reality until it catches up with you and the only avenue of continuation is insanity or death. Most people choose to go insane, instead of abandoning the group or social identity. Then people just getting initiated see that it's ok to go insane. So the next generation takes after the insane and goes even more insane because they're even further removed from the reality. Ad infinitum.
