There are many species of roaches. German roaches are the "filthy disgusting human habitation" variety. If you see some other variety, it's entirely possible that it wandered in from outside. The German variety? Congrats, no one's deep cleaned since Carter was president and everyone has ignored roaches running around for months to years. Also, if you see 1 roach of another species...you may well have 1 roach. If you see 1 German roach, you have 1000 roaches and will be horrified if you start looking behind appliances, sinks, etc.
