Maybe it was understood that it was a sign of moral decay/societal decay, eventually leading to social collapse if that becomes the norm
Maybe it was understood that it was a huge vector of diseases
Maybe both
What I'm pretty sure of however, is that, it was related to a matter of collective survival, because that's why you build a religion to begin with; To manage the group, and the individual and its interractions within the group, and the interraction of the group with the rest of the world
It's not for the sake of writting a random novel just because you can. A book is very expensive and hard to manufacture. (back then, every copy has to be made by hand... And people who could read and write weren't legions)
