There are WAY better guns than AR-15s. The Mini 14 for example. AK-47 is another superior firearm. .556 or .762 is the way.
How are they superior?
Depends a lot on preference but AKs usually have a better range, easier to maintain, less parts to break, ammo can be higher grain. AR-15s are the civilian version of the M-16, which most gun guys (at least the ones I know personally) say is a bad gun. I have no military experience so I no point of reference nor can I speak to it.
One guy told me once the M16 was a gun crippled on purpose but I dunno.
He's partially right, when the M16 was first introduced there were quite a few failures which was improved over time. All three platforms have nearly identical maintenance with ease of maintaining also being the same, the AR is available in a much larger range of calibers than the AK.
The mini 14 is a pity pick for the dodgeball team, it's a featureless AR with a non standard magazine and a severely limited aftermarket. Sorry mini 14 guys, cope, seethe and dilate.
The reliability between the AR and AK is about equal depending on the quality of the parts used, even a $400 PSA AR will last for thousands of rounds provided you occasionally clean it and oil the bolt.
The biggest difference comes from modularity and aftermarket support. The AR platform is fully modular requiring commonly available tools to fully disassemble save for the barrel. Once you have a lower built you are free to build up another upper and swap between the two by opening two pins, it can be an entirely different purposed weapon in a matter of seconds while the AK would require either an afternoon of tinkering or a trip to the gunsmith. The AR has a much larger aftermarket than the AK due to its modular design as well.
The controls on the AR can be made ambi or wrong handed very easily, the charging handle by its top mounted position is already ambi itself while the AK requires you to either break your right hand from the grip to charge it or do an awkward underhanded side swipe. The AR has a simpler mag catch, if you can line a box up with a hole you can load it while the AK has a roller lock type catch, you need to insert a tab on the front of the receiver and roll the mag backwards. This seems trivial until you try to do anything under stress, it's a lot easier to mess that up than on an AR platform. The safety of the AK by its design scratches the crap out of the receiver, the AR does not and as a bonus will likely set itself on safe should you drag the receiver through the dirt.
Accuracy between both platforms is about the same with no clear winner, some AKs are tack drivers and some are turds, same for ARs.
Tl;dr the AR is superior to both because of its modularity, aftermarket support and controls.
