Oh, lots/some do. I watch a bunch of prison stuff. I also know you have it in your cell in Maine - provided you're of the right security level. I've sent a guitar in to a buddy that went to prison. It sits right in his cell with him. He's in minimum security, but he had it in his cell in medium security as well. It's decidedly not allowed in maximum security.
In one case, there was a dude in max - but special consideration (death row) who had a nice looking Martin D-28 in there with him.
I think somebody beat another inmate with a guitar in my state back in the 70's and they took them away from everybody ever since
I do know that it's a bitch to replace your strings in Maine's prisons.
You've gotta get someone on the outside to send them to you. Then, you need to schedule an appointment to go to the security office. Once there, you have to change your strings in front of the officer, including trimming them down correctly.
They don't want the strings to be used for tattooing.
He gets out sometime this year. I write a letter once in a while and make sure he's got money on his books to make his life a little easier. He also calls, but phone calls are stupidly expensive from jails/prisons. There's some local regulation that helped and some federal regulation that only applies to the fed joints where they're limited to like $0.25 a minute.
The local jail charges $15 for a ten minute phone call
I can understand that, you can easily chock someone out with one, or make a saw
