I almost retired to the Tahoe/Truckee Pass area of California. They get 8 to 12 feet of snow in a storm sometimes.

They have roads/storms where they stop traffic and only let certain traffic through - where you have to have chains on the car. They won't let you through otherwise.

But, I was able to get a giant chunk of land in Maine at a much lower price. There's no way I could have bought 3k acres in that area. It just wouldn't happen.

Also, the land here was a whole lot less expensive. Like a lot less expensive. I spent well under $1000 an acre for the property the house sits on.

Plus Maine had a house across the road that I could buy. That put me in the area and able to help/watch while my house was constructed. So, I could be in Maine to retire sooner/easier.

I put a bid in for the property, I won the bid, and I signed for the property a few weeks later.

And you were already living in the northeast corridor too

I had a great deal of familiarity with Maine already, but mostly Southern Maine and Central Maine.

My family even owned a hunting cabin here in Maine - though I hadn't been there since I was really young.
