500 yards still is not even a third of a mile

Nope. It's still a long distance away. You're using just the slightest bit of the front site, like the sliver of light that reflects off the very front of the site.

Every single Marine is qualified to do so. If they are not qualified, they are not Marines.

There are all sorts of jobs in the military where you never even really touch a firearm. You don't even train with them.

I dont think my vision is good enough for me to hit a target with any accuracy at 500 yards

I don't think I can at my age. My eyesight isn't that good anymore.

But, the Marine Corps will issue you a pair of glasses. We called 'em 'prophylactics' 'cause the glasses were so ugly they'd scare women away. But, if it was reasonable and possible to correct your vision enough to qualify, they'd get you some spectacles meant to survive a war.

They look like black-winged glasses from the 50s. Hell, they are black winged glasses from the 1950s.
