It's still in use, all these years later.
It'll mount right up to my Humvee.
The .50 BMG round is an 'anti-materiel' round. It's not something you survive if you're hit. They use it to do things like shoot through buildings to kill the people all the way on the other side. You use it to stop engines. It will penetrate an engine block and may very well come out on the other side.
There are different rounds for it. You can get some that are meant to penetrate and those meant to explode on impact.
I would not want to be facing a HMMWV with that attached to the top
Unless you do something really stupid, you probably won't ever face that.
On the other hand, gotta figure death will be pretty quick.
It's also used as a sniper round, fired out of a different firearm. I have one of those. I have a Barratt 82A1. It's semi automatic. It has a range of up to just about 6,000 feet.
I would be gone before long if shot by that.
