I can not imagine ever paying over 5 grand for a guitar, even at that it better be super fucking awesome.
LOL There are players, collectors, and players who collect. I'm in the latter group. I pay what I pay because I value the guitar that much. I pay what I pay because it's worth that to me to own an example. I also sometimes pay just because I know it'll increase in price and make a good store of value. So, there are guitars I don't play that are worth a lot of money. It's not their value that stops me from playing them, not really... It's that I have more suitable guitars to play that aren't going to decrease in value 'cause they're 'player grade' types of deals.
I own a number of Les Pauls from the 50s, including a couple that are signed - complete with COA. I don't play the signed versions, 'cause I don't need to. I already have player grade examples to pick from.
In 2007, Gibson did a 'new collector guitar' a week. Every week, well for 47 weeks, they released a special limited edition (400 examples each) of a new guitar. I own almost all of 'em. I don't play them, 'cause I have other examples of those guitars. They're collectible and hold value as such. I don't actually need to play them.
Now - sometimes I do play them. Sometimes I take 'em for a spin, just 'cause I feel like it. It feels pretty special to play a guitar that's worth six figures. It's an experience. It's something pretty much nobody on the planet is going to be able to do, but it's something I get to do any time I want. And I enjoy that... Not to brag, but because it's enjoyable to me. It doesn't make me good, or better than other people, it just means I get to play some special guitars.
I've got hundreds of 'em. The rest of my collection will be here soon. That's at least another 80 to 120 guitars. So, I'm pretty excited about that.
I am not a collector, I am a player! And I am a cheap bastard
I am both a player and a collector.
I think my playing stands in a class all its own. So, anyone trying to use collector as a derogatory term (with regards to me) would be pretty silly looking. I collect because I can. Even before I was a man of means, I collected. I'd save up my money to buy guitars and associated gear.
I'm pretty interested to find out what I have in storage. I don't actually know what's in storage. They're all guitars I owned before moving to Maine.
But, there was a brief period of time where I had money but had not yet moved to Maine. I bought some guitars during that period.
Plus, there are all (well, not all - but quite a few) of the guitars I purchased between 1968 and 2007.
That's a lot of guitars... I suspect some of 'em are worth a few bucks. I don't even really remember what's in there.
There's also a bunch of associated kit. So, I haven't got a fuckin' clue what all is in there. They should start showing up next week.
LOL Now would be a good time for you to be local. You'd likely inherit a guitar or three as I went through what I have and what I really don't need to keep. I won't sell any of them, but I may give a few away.
