Oh, I thought they put the gibson name on the guitars
No, no... There were some pretty close to it headstock labels during the lawsuit years, but that was largely a Japan thing.
For a while, Japan was making REALLY close copies - including headstock shape and a logo that'd look similar. Gibson sued the shit out of those that imported guitars into America (and other nations).
So, they stopped making those. Those are actually kinda collectible today, more for nostalgia reasons than anything else. They're known as 'lawsuit era guitars'.
But, no... My Chibson clearly says IYV on the headstock.
I would be a terrible appraiser LoL Unless if course I studied it.
You just have to buy a few hundred guitars, handle hundreds (thousands?) more, and you'll get good at it.
In both the instances where someone tried to scam me, you could also tell just by the feel of the instrument that something was wrong.
In theory, I could own some fakes. In my opinion, the odds of me buying a fake are pretty low. There just isn't that much forgery going on.
Speaking of 'forgery' - I was doing more searching and came across this:

So, dig out your soldering iron and save yourself $7880.
