You just have to buy a few hundred guitars, handle hundreds (thousands?) more, and you'll get good at it.
In both the instances where someone tried to scam me, you could also tell just by the feel of the instrument that something was wrong.
In theory, I could own some fakes. In my opinion, the odds of me buying a fake are pretty low. There just isn't that much forgery going on.

It's a clone of the very expensive Klon Centaur. It does the same thing it did - distortion with a bit of a twist on it.
So, if you want that tone - and don't mind soldering a few ends - you can have one for under $25!
That's a lot less than $8000.
