The temperatures here have barely been below zero as well. We usually have a couple weeks where it does not get above zero this time of the year. Not so far this year.
Yeah, you're right there the jet stream likes to sit in the winter, just hammering you with arctic air.
We tend to get one of those weeks back home, but we've had pretty mild winters for the past few. I smashed my femur in 2018 and we had shit for winter that year - which made me grateful as I wasn't missing anything. But, they've been pretty tame ever since.
I don't miss the bitter cold negative 50 wind chill days at all
Yeah, those suck.
The worst one I calculated was a -98° - with the windchill added to it.
It was like -34° and then we had wind gusts up to 60 mph with a sustained wind of something like 45 mph.
It was intense. The moisture froze in the air so there was like a fine mist of small, really tiny, particles that made any exposed skin hurt immediately. You could turn back-to the wind and pee and it wouldn't really burn a hole in the snow - it built up like a stalagmite of frozen piss.
That's the most brutal cold I've ever experienced.
Anything longer than a few minutes would kill someone who wasn't dressed for it. Even if you were dressed for it, it'd kill you - it'd just take longer, like a half hour.
Not even the locals went outside to work. Besides, it was too cold for much of anything nto start that hadn't been stored in a heated environment. Not even engine block warmers were enough - though the good kind, the engine cooler heater (heats the radiator fluid directly) still worked.
It was fucking insane.
That one wasn't all that long ago. It was sometime between 2015 and 2017.
