A band goes on at 18:00. We go on at 20:00. The show's over at 22:00. So, four hours of music. That's pretty common. It's usually 21:00 to 01:00. (All times roughly measured. We're usually done at 00:30, for example.)

if they have band on labor day here they play at noon

It's the venue's decision, but it's probably based on the fact that it's a bar and people tend to do stuff with their family during the day. This starts after they'd have their BBQ and whatnot.
