Pretty soon, I'm gonna be able to get caught with cocaine and pay a $100 fine or be referred to treatment. Given that I'm not an addict, they're not going to make me do treatment.
Yeah... I can even drive with it and not get charged with trafficking.
Crazy!
That article says 'Advocates argue that after a year in which over 500 Mainers died from drug overdoses, it’s clear that criminalizing people who use drugs is not working'.
I don't think the drugs being illegal has a lot to do with people overdosing. I think that is probably more due to fentanyl.
Either way it would be great to not have to worry about being locked up because of a little marching powder
Actually, it being illegal has everything to do with it. If there were clear dosages people would know their tolerance and stick to them. It being illegal means that people put shit in there to make it more powerful so that they can still sell weight. Then, there's the entire lack of education that goes with it.
If it was legal, we wouldn't have that problem. We'd know exactly what we were buying. The people buying drugs don't typically want to overdose. They OD because some jackass stuck fentanyl in a tiny bit of heroin mixed with baby laxatives and ground up vitamin B.
I am not so sure about if it was legal there would not be those problems.
Just look at the states where pot is legal. To sell it you have to have a license and it is taxed at a ridiculous rate. It is cheaper to buy it from a guy selling it from his house than to use the government approved dispensaries.
I am sure that even if it was legal there would still be street dealers doing the very things you say contribute to those deaths. And their drugs would probably be cheaper then the dispensary drugs, and we both know drug addicts are usually scrounging for enough money for their next fix. I just think they would go get their fix off the street before coming up with more money to go to a dispensary to get the regulated drugs
