It was the drivers that stopped driving and insisted on making the sport safer. Drivers simply started not driving or making their own safety systems.

Today, it'd probably be the spectators that'd insist it be safer. Today, everyone wants to tell everyone else what they can and can't do, Though, well, that might have always been true.
