Oh my dad grew it specifically for the opium, he got the seeds from afghanistan

I am pretty sure it's not illegal - until you harvest the opium from them.

I am not sure, he was never arrested for it. Though that could just mean he wasn't caught

Oh, it's definitely illegal when you harvest the opium. I am just not sure if it's illegal before that - but I'm pretty sure it isn't.

You can actually order poppy bulbs and make a tea out of them. That's perfectly legal. You won't get very high.
