They stay, it just requires more. I've got about a dozen people who are really good and come work for me every year, and then we'll need a half dozen more and have to hire them each year. I want to get the berries off the bushes while they're at peak ripeness. It's a time-limited affair.

They start to shrivel and the animals eat even more. The animals actually eat a large percentage of the harvest, an estimated 20 to 30% is lost to animals and spoilage.
