Now there are two versions of this, one by Johnny Horton and the other by the Les Humphries singers.

Now the Les Humphies singers song MEXICO is the (((mainstream))) one I've heard where they bastardised the lyrics or tried to but I'm almost 100% sure they sing the same lyrics in the chorus

>Fired our guns and the British kept a-comin' There wasn't nigh as many as there was a while ago We fired once more and they begin to runnin' On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico

But the LHS version the (((modern))) version goes:

>Well we fired our guns Saw the pretty girls a comin'. There wasn't quite as many as there was a while ago We fired some more and then we started runnin' All down the Mississippi to the Gulf of ...Mexico,mexico,mexico.

Which is just shit and makes no sense at all.

The reason I bring this song to attention was for the favoured lyric in the last verse which is actually in the LHS version:

> Well cannon balls flew and the ship began to sink The water started risin' so we really had to think. And then by chance stood a man as black as coal So we grabbed him by the trousers and we plugged him in the hole

I dunno why they'd bother to change the lyrics to get rid of the history and the people but add that little tid bit but it makes me have the warm fuzzies.

Anyway thank you for listening.

Great analysis of the song. Thoughtful and critical. I never thought of it like that. Thanks!

Heard the John Horton version on a record player in school. Still one of my favorite memories.
