Tribalism is *fundamentally* self interested. That we are a biologically hardwired to work in the interests of family and kin is well documented, and it arises from genetics - the more genes you have in common with someone, the more rewarding helping them is. Helping someone who shares all of your genetics to succeed in life is biologically identical to succeeding in life yourself. *Individuals* might personally be brainwashed to work against their genetic self interest here and there, but *groups* trend towards collaboration with genetic relatives. The existence of firefighters does not change the reality that people are more likely to save their own children from a burning building than risk their lives for someone else's children. This is why tribalism leads to stable, functional, cultures because it works with this fundamental reality of human nature - to help your family is to help yourself, and a tribe is ultimately a family unit. Humanism, like communism, will always fail because morality and ethos *always* give out to self interest over time, especially in times of deprivation, and groups will *always* trend towards acting in their own self interest on a statistical level. "Thou shalt not steal" lasts exactly as long as your children have enough to eat. You cannot build a society on the assumption that everyone is a firefighter.
