Croatian language is a mix of messapic, latin, gothic and church slavonic language. This is why we have so many insults and curse words.

What is the worst insult, and how does it translate?

Fuck you mother black

I think my translate plugin might suck.

It's now a common curse you see people utter in Croatia as they have to deal with Nepalese and Indians working in various service positions with 0 knowledge of Croatian language.

I witnessed it during my last holidays. It's more as an expression of fatigue rather than abuse. The correct translation is 'fuck your black mother' as in 'curse you mother for bringing you to this world'.

Imagine you are 50+ years old. Worked your whole life, never studied English language, and now you can't buy bread and milk because the fucker at the local counter-service shop doesn't speak the language of the country he immigrated to, and is giving you a dirty look for not understanding English.

Ok, a real question: How long do you think it would take to develop conversational fluency in Croatian for someone who knows nothing about Croatian? It varies a lot by person, so my opinion is maybe a year of immersion to make it easy.

I speak several Western European languages fluently. The closest I have to Eastern Europe is a bit in Russian.

None of these are especially helpful for learning Croatian, but I have experience learning to communicate in languages I knew nothing about.

If you have a knack for languages I believe you could get there in several months. It is a complex language, and people compare it to German on level of complexity, but still a lot of Western Europeans move to Croatia, marry there and learn the language.

Didn't Serbian and Croatian use to be the same language up until the 90s?

[–] 1 pt

It's more like a different dialect than a wholly different language.

I've only been to Croatia once and that was to Zagreb. I'd like to see Split and Dubrovnik.

I've been to Zagreb.

I'm sorry you had to go through this.

Split and Dubrovnik are great, but Dubrovnik has become an expensive overcrowded tourist trap since the GOT was recorded there and made it popular among the soy crowd.
