A Christian charity volunteer has received a £13,000 payout & an apology from police who arrested her for praying silently outside an abortion clinic.
Isabel Vaughan-Spruce claimed against West Midlands Police for two wrongful arrests & false imprisonments for assault & battery relating to an intrusive search of her person & a breach of her human rights both in respect to the arrests & to the onerous bail conditions imposed on her. In what is being reported to be the first “thought crime” case prosecuted in 21st Century Britain, Isabel Vaughan-Spruce was searched by police (including through her hair), arrested, criminally charged & tried, even though she had prayed imperceptibly & not expressed any opinion outside of her own mind.
Lord David Frost, senior Conservative peer & former Cabinet Minister, commented:
“It is incredible that people have been arrested for thoughtcrime in modern Britain. I am very glad Ms Vaughan-Spruce has received compensation for her unjust arrest for this so-called offence."
