While I partially agree on micromanaging but isn't god is supposed be "all knowing". I had thought of a malevolent god just toying with humanity like his personal plaything but wouldn't that get boring?
Some people consider god as the ultimate tyrant, and the universe, as a "pyramid" of tyranny, with god at the top
And when you look at our world, if you look at life itself on earth, animals/life forms, eating each others endlessly to survive... It indeed makes sense
So, to answer your question, in the case of a malevolent god and why he would spend his days "toying" with mere mortals, I could answer that, maybe he needs it, maybe he somehow feeds on suffering. A sadistic god, like a maniac torturing people for the sake of it because he just can't help it. Maniacs/sadists, never get bored doing their stuff, they never stop, that's why they need to be stopped, but I digress
