So, to answer your question, in the case of a malevolent god and why he would spend his days "toying" with mere mortals, I could answer that, maybe he needs it, maybe he somehow feeds on suffering. A sadistic god, like a maniac torturing people for the sake of it because he just can't help it. Maniacs/sadists, never get bored doing their stuff, they never stop, that's why they need to be stopped, but I digress
