It has something to do with the fact that the eyes of both sides pictures are lined up exactly on the same plane. Put your finger horizontally across the gif lined up with the crosshair, blocking out the lower or upper half and it doesn't work. Pretty cool optical illusion.

But if you stare at an imaginary crosshair where center would be upper or lower it kinda works again.
