I observed and that was my conclusion not baseless assumption.
Try using just shapes of different colors. Same test. Cycle through. I would theorize that the shapes would appear to merge into deformities as well. I doubt any type of magics or super phenomenon is present other than the rantings of demons and aliens and shit. Like apes discovering a weird pillar that shows up and they become agitated and are confused. Hit it. Throw poo at it. Because they don’t understand it.

It has something to do with the fact that the eyes of both sides pictures are lined up exactly on the same plane. Put your finger horizontally across the gif lined up with the crosshair, blocking out the lower or upper half and it doesn't work. Pretty cool optical illusion.
