This is basically Robert Heinlein's design for moving roads in the "Roads Must Roll." But it existed way before Heinlein wrote his story. I wonder if Heinlein knew about this moving sidewalk? Notice that it moves at two speeds. The outer edge moves more slowly to allow pedestrians to mount it, and the inner band moves more quickly. Heinlein postulated multiple bands moving at increasingly high speeds.
