The fact that we don't have more nuke testing videos despite thousands being blown up in tests is a shame. Who knows what environmental damage that has caused; the least the various governments could do is give us something cool to watch

The videos are classified. Of those that are available many have vertical streaks of smoke that show up like contrails which have never been explained. I bet there are still things that are kept secret that could be revealed in those videos.

I always assumed the smoke trails were from small rockets and intended to better show how the pressure wave traveled away from the blast source.

They are, you're exactly right, all the above-ground tests had both rockets and balloons in the air as well as many dummy targets on the ground or floating on the water. Most of the rockets and balloons were equipped with instruments such as shock recorders, thermocouples, microphones, barometers, and so forth. In Nevada they would set off a blast and then immediately send in a few platoons of soldiers to pick up the science shit.
