You're right though, might make it but from orbit to surface and one retro rocket that guides the decent fails or is acting up and everyone in that rocket is a smudge on mars for future fertilization. The only safe way to do it is to make gliding landers for the thin atmosphere and have a robot made "they're expendable" landing field fully ready for the rockets and an underground base already dug out of the surface at least 30 ft down and all solar and other stuff setup and waiting.

FUnny though this is the perfect place for some kind of nuclear plants that can run for centuries at low output and then just shoot the waste if not recycled into the sun to burn up.

A moon base would make more sense. Even better would be a small O'Neil cylinder to act as a support base for further works.

I think Elon Musk wants to be as far away from the US as is technically possible with going to Mars since he likely realizes that the US if he makes a moon base will say that it's a sister body of the planet Earth or the UN so then 50 years later they'll just send armed troops to take over or even destroy it with a rocket if they resist.

Mars on the other hand would take a lot more expensive vehicle or rocket to get to Mars even so I see why he did it since the greedy ones will try to steal it if they can at a reasonable cost but Mars will be expensive for at least a 100 more years and so by then Mars will likely be more advanced than earth is with more freedom comes more invention and creativity.

The problem of going to war with the moon is that they hold the high ground. All the high ground.

And they likely have independent power supplies, food/water supplies for years, and a mass-driver or two that they could re-purpose to slinging lead instead of goods towards Earth.

Thing is, in the current climate, the entire moon would be filled with billionaire jews and their servants doing exactly nothing to further the space cause.
