"They" (state wildlife departments etc) tell you to fight back against black bears. Unlike grizz, the majority of fatal black bear attacks, like over 90%, are predatory in nature, and over 90% of those are boars. Playing dead is useless if its attacking you for the purpose of eating you. Youre just making yourself an easy meal.
