It's not the only thing you can do, nor is playing dead the recommended first option. I was taught to stand ground, make lots of noise, look big / intimidating and strike at them (ideally with a blunt object or weapon) when/if they come at you as last resort.

i thought you stripped down to your underwear, screamed at the top of your voice, and launched at them swinging fists....
or maybe that was just drop bears.
either way no one ever survives a dropbear attack so im not sure thats real.
