Pretty much. I talked with someone once that was very disturbing. They were 'religious' but I would not call it that.. They feared punishment and were not godly. They made some comment like "Wouldn't you rape/murder/etc if you didn't burn in hell forever"?
No, NO I WOULD FUCKING NOT. I don't need religion to tell me those things are evil/bad but the fact that the only thing keeping you from doing it is sick.
The only thing keeping some of these people in line is the fear of punishment. This is the same with what we see in the modern left or in the sandbox and black countries. Look at all of the cities that are "defunding the police" and letting criminals out without punishment. Case and point.
They have to have a iron fist over them or they will do anything they feel like doing. Without brutal, harsh, and immediate punishment they will not stay in line. They are evil.
That mentality is commonly the result of pervasive child abuse. That abuse creates sociopaths whose behavior isn't constrained by morality, but instead by consequences. They wont refrain from burning down AutoZone because it's immoral, but because they fear being arrested for arson. Which means they'll do anything once consequences are removed. Because that's what they saw their parents do - deliberately harming children for their own wicked enjoyment because there were no immediate consequences.
yeah, that is a factor but it also shows a weak and damaged mind that cares for nothing but their own pleasure and to avoid punishment. They, are, evil. You can escape the behavior beaten into you if you are strong. If you are not strong enough then you are just as evil as the one that inflicted it on you.
