I would say guess work. New fault lines can appear and as fast as the model was running it may appear as "popping into existence" while on human time scales it would be more like tens or hundreds of thousands of years.
In the end I don't know. I not a geologist, but I do know that when you are dealing with such large time scales there will be guess work.
