Their boomer parents taught them that if you just suck your bosses dick hard enough, you'll eventually be the boss. They still haven't adapted to the modern corporate structure where you get nowhere without aggressive negotiation. There is still value to hard work but only if you can make yourself irreplaceable and use that to twist your bosses arm.
