Almost summer. We rototilled a bunch of grass in our yard to make a plot after the ground unfroze. Didn't add any soil amendments so the ground is probably nutrient poor. It's clay-heavy as well. Lots of weeding, as it's hard to completely till grass away. It also has a very thick root system, which left the soil very clumpy.
Planted seeds approximately May 15 - generally last day of heavy frost. Many of the seeds didn't take. I was a cheap ass and bought the ultra-clearance seeds for $0.25 a pack which may have been a factor. I also tend to plant to deep. Also the soil sucks. Anyway, after we saw what sprouted and didn't sprout we ended up buying some starts.
Started adding an organic fertilizer to the soil and letting the rain water it in. Slugs have been a problem. I did get some slug poison but only enough to cover about half the garden. After that experiment, comparing the poison half to the non-poison, I would say Corey's slug poison is effective.
Got the irrigation hoses set up last week. They need a little work. Used, donated, so they were cheap.
