The main trick for me has been seperating compost and mulch. They're basically the same thing, but based on the density of the material. Mulch is heavier, compost is finer. Also avoid citrus fruits like spolied lemons, etc, the juice produces a lot of mold before it breaks down. The key to mulching and composting seems to be rotating the pile regularly to maintain aeration that lets the microbes work faster.
