Two years ago I started a mulch pile. Now it is 2'x3' and over a foot high. At this size I found alternating between piling it up and spreading it out helps control the moisture.

I use a compost bin for the nice stuff like lettuce ends, broccoli stems, broad leaves from the yellowdock and calla lilies constantly popping up, but it's nice to have a good mulch pile to eat up yard trimmings.

We’re planning on starting composting this spring - any tips for getting started? Some people act like there is a super strict formula, others make it seem like no big deal just throw stuff in there. What have you found works for you?

The main trick for me has been seperating compost and mulch. They're basically the same thing, but based on the density of the material. Mulch is heavier, compost is finer. Also avoid citrus fruits like spolied lemons, etc, the juice produces a lot of mold before it breaks down. The key to mulching and composting seems to be rotating the pile regularly to maintain aeration that lets the microbes work faster.
