I've found articles saying it can be done, so long as the compost is not used to grow food, and articles saying it's acidic, high in protein and harmful bacteria and smells awful. Can anyone offer some insight on how to do this properly or whether it's just a bad idea?

Would it not just get eaten by scavengers? Or are you burying it or something?

Yes, it's in a big plastic bin.

Ah, makes more sense. It sounded like you just were leaving a pile and there was confusion.

Yeah, that's an internet forum for ya..to be clear, I don't make it a 'habit' to compost meat, I just do it occasionally, I prefer not to but if I have a lot I hate to waste it, I have no animal to feed it to, like pigs, or a dog.

I'm being lazy and I don't turn the compost, I do keep it moist, but you're supposed to turn it to let it aerate, so it will break down quicker, I used to do that but now I just let it sit, just takes a bit longer.

Occasionally I'll open the lid to let the sun hit and kill any nasty creatures (bugs) that might have come in. I'll add various things over the weeks, dirt and scraps, rotten eggs, grass, milk, broth, anything organic.
