regarding burying wood - once it breaks down, that rotten wood makes some great soil, but its going to rob you of nitrogen until it does that.

another option is to mulch your wood and spread it on top of the soil. it keeps the weeds at bay, retains moisture, doesn’t rob the soil of nitrogen, continuously feeds worms, grows edible mushrooms, and also eventually breaks down into richer soil. walnut/cherry wood chips don’t matter either if its mulch on top. you can potentially get free chips dropped off at your house if you reach out to local arborists.
